Movies won't fix America, but they might help us talk to each other again

Most Americans—87%, in fact—are tired of political division. It’s not just a nuisance; the same number believe polarization threatens the future of our country. We know it’s bad. We feel it every time a family meal turns tense or when neighbors stop talking over yard signs.

 

But here’s something surprising: 70% of us also say we feel personally responsible for bridging divides. We want to reconnect. We just don’t know how.

 

Travel ban violates connection

Our CEO, Elder Suzanne P. Kelly, shared this statement in response to the Executive Order of June 4, 2025, banning travel to the U.S. from certain countries:

 

"As Minnesota Council of Churches watches a continued assault on refugees, immigrants, BIPOC communities, and more, we wholeheartedly oppose the latest executive order to ban travel from 12 countries, most on them on the continents of Asia and Africa, or whose residents represent the African diaspora.

It has been difficult today to process news reports of the devastating assassination of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, and the critical shooting of Sen. John Hoffman and his wife. Our hearts break for the Hortman and Hoffman families, their colleagues, and constituents, and for our entire state.

DOCTOR Pamela Ngunjiri upon the completion of her Doctorate of Ministry thesis, "Barriers to Churches Understanding How They Are Impacted by White Supremacy Culture." Rev. Dr. Ngunjiri received her D.Min. certificate in a May ceremony at Bethel University.
